What's meerschaum?
Meerschaum
(means "sea foam") is a very special mineral found from
30 to 450 feet below the surface of the earth near the town of Eskisehir,
Turkey.
It is mined using hand tools. It is one of the most porous substances
in nature, and acts like a filter that absorbs nicotine. As it is used,
it changes color from white to honey brown and darker brown, and the value
of the meerschaum increases. You have to feel the weight of it! It is
lighter than you can imagine! They are all hand carved, and
totally hand made. The only materials used to prepare our meerschaum pipes
are small knives, employed by craftsmen
who
learn this art as children. Very nice smoking pipes are made of this wonderful
mineral.

Meerschaum,
contrary to popular belief, is not the fossilized remains of sea creatures,
but a mineral: Hydrous Magnesium Silcate, it is found Meerschaum’s magnesium
content provides strength while the hydrogen and oxygen contribute porosity.
As one of nature’s lightest and most porous substances, Meerschaum is
a natural filter. This natural absorbency causes the meerschaum pipes
to slowly change color, eventually turning rich brown color. Visit
our catalog pages to see the magic. Read
the comments about our pipes from our customers!
